Man has been doubting God since virtually the beginning of time. Take a look at the brief conversation between Eve and the serpent. Genesis 3:1-4 “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die.”
The first thing Satan does is to turn God’s safeguard on the innocence of Adam and Eve into a negative. One of the big problems, even in many churches is that God’s Word is used as a list of “you can’t do that” negatives when it is so much the more a way to live under His care and protective blessings.
Eve takes the bait that is offered. Her declaration regarding the tree is more than what God said. She says “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” God said in Genesis 2:17, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” They had to touch it. Adam was charged with dressing and keeping the Garden. They just were not supposed to eat it. Satan turns Eve is her heels and says, God is wrong about that. Go ahead…. Try it. We know the rest of the story. Genesis 3:6 “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”
I could write a full commentary on the multiple failures here. Eve failed to understand God’s instructions. Adam, who was with her, failed on so many levels to protect his wife. They both failed to remember their Creator. They both fell for the world’s “fake news.” The result is they died that day.
Their innocence died. Their livelihood died. Their home died. Their entire existence as they knew it died in that moment. Why? They bought what the word was selling rather than to lean on what God had provided. We wonder why so many lives are wrecked today. It is for the same reason. They bought what the world is selling rather than leaning on what God has provided. Sadly, there are too many people, to many Christians, doubting God. Let’s choose not to be one of them.
